About Aruna HarPrasad

Aruna Har Prasad began her film career as a Set Decorator in U.N Lloyd’s film,
“Sea Wolves”, Followed by Richard Attenborough’s Film, “Gandhi”. Her role expanded in the Raj Epic “Far Pavilions” where she worked closely with the Director, Peter Duffel, as a Cultural Advisor. The Director asked her to re-work on two crucial sequences: the ‘Sati’ and the 'Royal Wedding', in order to make it more authentic. This invaluable experience widened her perspective in her film career and she never looked back.

In 1988, Aruna set up her own film company, KAS Movie Makers, in Partnership with Kalyan Mukherjee. KAS Movie Makers was the first one stop Production Company servicing international films who came to shoot in India. KAS Movie Makers worked on over 300 films, Features, Commercials & Documentaries with international & national directors. To name a few, Satyajit Ray, Kim Jon Won, Tarsem Singh Dhandwar, Pieter-Rim-de Kroon, Tom Hooper, Pasquale Pozzesere, Martin Kratt, Burt Brinkerhoff, Martin Scorcese, Marco D’Altri, Paul Mcartney, Nanouk Lepold, Don McCullin…

Aruna shot her first documentary film on the bandits of the Chambal valley. She was the first filmmaker to interview the female Bandit Phoolan Devi who was then in Gwalior Jail.

Her second film “The Tribes of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands”, shot in 1994, remains the most exclusive visual documentation of one of the last primitive tribes, mentioned in George Weber’s website – Andaman.org.
The documentary film, “Eunuchs - India’s Third Gender” Co-Produced with the Director Michael Yorke was a very special film for Aruna. It received the Margret Mead Award in 1991.

Aruna’s documentary films on kaleidoscopic India have been exhibited at International Film Festivals. Her series “Indians” was telecast on the National Channel, Doordarshan, several times.

Films have ,and always will be, Aruna’s first passion. Currently she is exploring nature photography. She had her first exhibition in New Delhi at the Habitat Centre in August 2016, titled, “Wild & Free in Kas-a-Bebinca”. It captured the little known creatures that have made a home in her wild garden in Goa.

1988 to 2015 - Set up KAS Movie Makers Pvt Ltd in partnership with Kalyan Mukherjee
2001 - Member of the Censor Board of India & National Broadcasting Evaluation Committee for Doordarshan
2002 - She was nominated by the Government of India as Member of the Jury for the 49th National Film Awards, for the Feature Film & Indian Panorama Section
2003 - Member of the Board of Governors for Welham Girls’ School, Dehra Dun

Her love of the lens and eye for details, have been an integral part of her illustrious career as a filmmaker for nearly 4 decades. A documentary director, producer, cultural consultant, set decorator, line producer, creative consultant, screenwriter and even an actor - her talent took various forms while working with international & national acclaimed directors of the film industry.
